On Phi Phi Island I chose Harlequin Divers to get me started with diving and I chose to do the Open water PADI course. The Harlequin divers have their office over near the Phi Phi School just beyond the first bay at Tonsai Bay and bill themselves as Thailand's Premier Dive School. I wasn't disappointed.

Housed in the heart of action, in Andaman Beach Resort and just near the night merrymakers over at the Hippies Bar, the Harlequin divers have a well equipped infrastructure to take care of all you diving needs. The Harlequin divers make learning scuba diving a breeze. Having achieved proficiency in whatever the PADI system and SSSI system of diving, the Harlequin divers can take you almost anywhere among their twenty local sites covering other tiny islands from the Bida Island (Koh Bida) and the Phi Phi Ley Island, to Phuket Shark Point, the Wreck and more.

Imagine swimming below the surface in clear waters, gliding through, as you glimpse a Hawksbill turtle pass before your eyes! Wow! Just the thrill of it was enough to make me talk about it for days on end. (Sorry to my friends back at work!!)

From the history books; there was a time when diving was considered a sport for the rich and the famous or military, but then PADI (Professional Association of Driving Instructors) came up with safe structure for the common man to participate in this thrilling adventure. It did take a little bit of courage to start diving but I was transformed in confidence after my very first lesson.

We dived along the limestone outcrops on Phi Phi ley and skimmed through the corals, swam through overhanging corals, the Harlequin divers was brilliant. I didn't see the shy ghost pipe fish or the harmless black tip shark but the Harlequin Divers got me to see 5 leopard sharks. So remember you are in safe hands with the Harlequin divers.

As a beginner I opted in for the three and a half day PADI Open Water course over the one day “PADI discover scuba diving” course and I'm glad I did as I can now dive all over the world and will use the qualification when I dive in the Red Sea next year. So look out for the Harlequin Divers and prepare to gear up and have a brilliant time!

I didn't get to meet Jen the owner this time but his staff were super friendly and made me sure to book up another dive trip for the 2009 season.

With a shallow draft it allows the boat to get in and out from it's tidal location which is out of the busy Phi Phi pier area. It also allows it to beach on some of the most spectacular beaches on Phi Phi Ley, like Maya Bay so that the lunch stop can if needed and wanted, be on dry land.
