The last year on the island was a tough one, following the Tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004. However, things are looking up. Most of the businesses have reopened, and everyone is looking forward to a good year. The community of the Phi Phi is a close knit one, and we all want to try and get back to some kind of normality.

The memorial ceremony on 26th December just gone was a chance for a lot of people to get some closure after a year of grief.

So, New Year, new projects. After taking a year off to help out with HiPhiPhi, a foundation set up to help the people of Phi Phi get back on their feet after the tsunami, I finally opened Blue View Divers on the 3rd, and we are off to a excellent start! It is great to get back into the water after spending a year off. So, now I am balancing foundation work with running the dive school.

Peak Season Diary for Blue View Divers on Phi Phi

December and January are the busiest months on the island, the weather is always bright and sunny, and the seas are calm. So, the diving is good. The New Year brings new fish. We are seeing a lot of juvenile fish on the sites, commonly known as glass fish. This makes the diving quite exciting, as they attract some of the smaller hunter fish species, such as king fish, barracuda, jacks and mackerel. We are also seeing a lot of old friends… leopard sharks, turtles, moray eels and lion fish to name a few.

Although I am running a dive school, I don’t get to do as much diving as before… The managerial work is sucking up a lot of my time, but as soon as we get a good routine, I will endeavor to get in the water more! Even though I have done a couple of thousand dives around Phi Phi, I never get bored down there. There are always different things to see, and every dive is unique.

Our longtail boat was launched for the first time this month which was very exciting. She is named Kathleen, and was blessed several times, you can’t be too blessed too much. We also managed to find, in my opinion, the best boat captain on the island, and possibly the world…. Bang Seem. He has been on the island most of his life, and knows all the best places to go, and really takes care of the boat.
