Snorkeling images from the Phi Phi Islands

Snorkeling on Phi Phi is brilliant. My favorites are the north wall of Loh Samah on Phi Phi Ley Island where a huge boulder has fallen from the cliff above many years ago and has made a natural tunnel where 1000's of minute fish shelter from the bigger fish. When the sun hits this area of Phi Phi Ley, the colors leave you breathless. Another more remote snorkeling favorite is Hin Klang between Bamboo Island and the main Phi Phi Don. This is a remote and tidal reef, the most dangerous on Phi Phi island but if you have a good guide has a wonderful variations of massive shoals of minute fish. and colorful coral. The one day snorkel trip of all the Phi Phi islands is the best value trip to see all the islands best snorkel spots.

Baitfish in front of snorkeling girl on Phi Phi Island Photo

Shoals of juveniles baitfish swimming in front of your mask is one of Phi Phi island’s most endearing sights. Some special places on Phi Phi Ley and Phi Phi Don the juveniles shoal in huge numbers, huge swarming balls that continually morph depending on the threats and opportunities felt by the minute fish.

It is important to fit you mask properly before entering the water as water can slip under the seal and if you haven’t cleaned the mask properly before you put it on it can steam up.

My favourite snorkeling is at shark point just off Long beach on Phi Phi Don in front of Phi Phi The beach Resort.

Lion fish and snorkelling guy on Phi Phi Island Photo

Lion fish on Phi Phi island are a relatively common sight. I remember seeing 6 in a small shoal once in front of Phi Phi Maya Bay. They seem to hold their position by floating and waiting. I must admit to not knowing what the eat but assume they eat the corals and vegetation, they don’t strike me as natural predators.

The Lion fish of Phi Phi are how ever delightful to watch with their unearthly tentacles. These tentacles are highly poisonous so please be careful when swimming near them.

Following the baitfish on Phi Phi Island Photo

This snorkeling photo was take on Phi Phi island on Phi Phi Ley itself. The island is almost all cliffs with 2 main beaches and about 15 tidal beaches. It is difficult to take in but apart from about 2 football pitches of flat headland the rest is cliffs. With little fresh water run off this is ideal for coral to develop and along with the stone fall makes the perfect habitat for young small fish such as the baitfish on the photo to thrive.

My favorite place to snorkel is under the northern walls of Phi Phi Maya Bay where there are overhangs and boulders up to 10 meters high. Here among the giant soft corals there are clouds of young fish.

Phi Phi Island bubbles below a snorkelling person Photo

This simple photo taken in the reefs near Zeavola Resort has a tremendous effect as the bubbles reflect the sunlight and bring out all the shades of silver.

My favourite snorkeling destinations in the north of Phi Phi island is at Hin Klang which is in between Mosquito Island, Bamboo Island national Park and the hotels in the northern part of Phi Phi Laem Tong. Here there reef is swept clean by strong tides every day and rarely cloudy. The reef is a home to many shoals of young fry and drift snorkels along it’s edges can be some of the best in Thailand.

In the center of the reef is a shallow sandy bottom that you can stand up in on most tides but note it can be rough when the North easterly wind blows strongly in High season.
