Phi Phi Maya Bay

Some people come to Phi Phi Island just to see this one place. Maya Bay was used to shoot the movie, "The Beach" starring Leonardo Di Caprio.
Having a look from afar at the scenery already from the main Phi Phi ferry transfer from Phuket to Phi Phi it is easily understandable why Maya Bay is considered the jewel of Phi Phi island and one of the prettiest places in the world.
To see Maya Bay at it's best however, is at sunrise and sunset on a full tide; halfday trips can be organzied without hassle from Phi Phi Island.
The surrounding sheer cliffs are magnificent and the warm seas and outstanding coral reef are a must for divers, snorkelers, kayakers and sightseers.
Most people assume that Maya Bay is just one beach but there are three beaches, two of which are very quiet in comparison to the main beach. There are some interesting little inlets and rock formations for the kayaker and snorkeler alike.

Maya Bay Phi Phi Island

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Island is where Leonardo di Caprio made his movie The Beach in the year 2000. The Movie showcased the islands to the point where Phi Phi Island has become one of the more recognized landscape scenery photo in Thailand.

There are more photos of Maya bay than almost any other are on Phi Phi Island and this bay has been voted 3rd most beautiful beach in the world. I beg to differ, but I still think it is the MOST beautiful beach in the world.

Maya Bay Phi Phi Island, the best beach in the world

Is Phi Phi Maya Bay the best beach in the world? Many would say it was. The perfectly golden sandy beach, the near perfectly enclosed cliff and lagoon, and the beautiful coral reef fit for the most discerning diving or snorkeling tripper.

I once crept though the hole on Loh Samah in to the back of Maya Bay in the middle of a storm in the middle of low season. The wind was blazing and when I got to Maya Beach itself it was perfect empty not a soul in sight. The sea was deep blue and wild with white foam out at the main Phi Phi Reef but over the sand it had an incredible turquios blue that took my breath away.

As I got to Maya beach a black tip shark was disturbed in no more than a meter of water and darted off to the deep. What a memory!

Maya Bay kayaking Phi Phi Island

Kayaking in Maya Bay can give you some fantastic hide away holes and caves, completely cut off from the rest of the bay and The Beach. You can paddle between the 3 main sandy beaches and shoot the rapids on the in coming time on the west entrance on the south side. I think kayaking is the best way to get around Maya Bay as you can see every thing first hand.

Pablo's picture in Maya Bay

Pablo took some wonderful images of snorkelers in Maya Bay, Phi Phi Ley Island many years ago but these vibrant colors still reflect the stunning sea life that surrounds the reefs just off shore. There are many National park buoys out off the coral reef to protect Maya Bay from anchor damage and it is from these the longtail boats allow you to enter the coral gardens without disturbing the natural ecology of the Maya Bay.
