I can never see enough of Loh Dalum Beach on a day like this when the weather is perfect. Just the number of people hanging out on this beach and you know you are at the place on Phi Phi island. During the day it's a place to meet, take a swim and relax. In the evening is there any place better than the beach for enjoying the stars and moonlite nights.
Finally one of the best resorts on Long beach is on phi-phi.com at http://phi-phi.com/hotel/thailand/koh-phi-phi/long-beach/phi-phi-paradise-pearl/. Here you are on one of the greatest Beaches in Thailand and get a charmingly run family resort, well away from the crowds in Tonsai Village. I havn't stayed here since they have completed their new rooms and upgrades but the tenure of the rooms looks alot better than the basic accommodation from before. The satellite TV, Fridge, all aircon rooms are also done out in a better decor than before making the experience of staying there alot more pleasurable.
So what is all the hype about. Phi Phi Don Chukit Resort is a normal bungalow resort on the beach of Phi Phi Don Island. Well talking to people who have just got back from their, they love it because it seems to be the real thing.. a locally run resort with bags of character. When you you add in the stunning views of Phi Phi Ley, a great beach and it's proximity to dive centers, and restaurants and nightlife, you have one of Phi Phi Island's best kept secrets.
What I like about the place is that it has 10 types of accommodation so you can find what you want, from beachfront deluxe to a simple fan room for those on a budget.
BANGKOK: -- Yesterday 44 areas in Bangkok are badly effected by flooding due to the capital’s inadequate drainage system. So consider if you need to travel through Bangkok in the next coouple of days.
Most of the flooded areas have returned to normal (Forty-two flooding spots)on Monday but the Ratchada-Ladprao intersection and Pongpetch Market are still an issue as of 11am Monday.
Drainage and Sewerage Department Director Charnchai Witoonpanyakij said 'flooding in inner Bangkok could normally be solved within two hours, but Sunday’s rainfall took more time for drainage in some areas located far from the river.'
There are seven drainage tunnels in the capitaland the department plans to build another from Bang Sue district to the Chao Phraya River. This will be open to private sector bidding later this year and has a budget of around Bt2 billion.
The Meteorological Department has asked the public to be careful of heavy rains in many areas nationwide. The Gulf of Siam and the Andaman Sea are expected to have 2-3 metres high waves in the next few days.
Weather-wise Phi Phi will be hot in August. How do you like your heat? up to 35 degrees. The main thing is to be prepared, take plenty of sun cream, drink lots of water and whatever you do stay somewhere with airconditioning! I have stayed there in May, and it was fine. Just keep out of the sun in the middle of the day – but then you’ll probably be indoors a lot anyway!!!
We stayed at the PP Erawan Palms Resort in Laem Tong which was just right for us as it a small and local resort and you could get to know a few of the faces around the place. The rooms were ideal and pool next to sea was the place we stayed alot. We spent some time over at Bamboo island and that is worth checking out early in the holiday as it is special. I would recommend the main village as it is full of drunk backpackers.
Phi Phi Ley is worth the effort but it was very busy the first time we went. We went the next day at 4 oclock and it was serene.
I spoke to Phil at Maya Bay Camping and he says that really the weather has been fantastic for Phi Phi in June, normally a wet and windy month. If it has rained, it has only been a an hour and then it stopped.
You have got to say that Lanah bay on Phi Phi is fantastic, world class. Very few people get to this part of Phi Phi even though it is only about 3 km from the main beach! I think this is one of Phi Phi Island's better secrets and you can get their from the Phi Phi lagoon Resort which is only 10 minutes walk away.
Yung Yong Gassem or Monkey Beach on Phi Phi Island is one of the most beautiful settings on the island. Dense jungle rolls down the mountainous clips of Phi Phi don and ends in a narrow strip of beautifully white sand and then meets the turquoise blue seas and coral reef of this famous Bay.
I have spent many mornings and afternoons at Yung Yong Gassem, Monkey Beach Phi Phi and find the atmosphere exquisite. The sounds of the jungle, the sea lApping by the side of the beach, the views of Nui Bay Cliffs, this is paradise!
Are these unusually Scary times in paradise Phi Phi Island? For what's going on in Bangkok today I don not want to repeat what the BBC has done very well.
There is a famous tee shirt that you can buy in many of the clothing shops on Phi Phi island that list all the catastrophes that have happened to the tourist industry in the last ten years. The 3 wars in Kuwait, Iraq, Afganistan, 9-11, SARS, Bird Flu, and as recently as 2004, the Indian ocean tsunami. The t shirts were a joke that showed that in spite of massive reductions in tourists arriving during the calamities, the travel business was resilient and determined to keep on going.
The tourists business had recovered from the latest disaster and was showing true signs of growing. When you’re tourist industry employs large swaths of the local population, growth in tourism is a good thing. Work for the local population Meant a better lifestyle not only for the individual person but also the families of dependents. These dependents are all over Thailand.
So there are two points. Local people on the island are fully aware that the events in the end might stop tourists arriving in Thailand for a short while and this could harm the travel business greatly but only in the short term. The second point is the Thai travel business is very quick to get going after these calamities and can resume normal service overnight.
It is interesting to note that bookings for Phi Phi holidays in 5,6,7 weeks from now are still going ahead at normal levels. This shows 3 points. Firstly people understand that the unrest in Thailand is a Thai matter and tourists are not involved. Secondly an extremely high percentage of travelers to Thailand are return Holiday makers and referrals from friends and are fully aware that what happens in Bangkok rarely influences or effects the islands to the South like Phi Phi. And thirdly a lot of these tourists are comfortable that the troubles will go away quickly.
This is one of the small simple guest houses on Phi Phi island that provide rooms full customers who have not Pre booked their holiday and have just walked in off the ferry to get a room. As it is often very full and the island can change from loads of availability two bursting at the seams, the Hussein guest house is often full recalls it is near the pier and easy for the touts to get back to the pier to try and get more customers from the same boat.
The Hussein guest house is very close to the Moskito diving right opposite what used to be fatties restaurant owned by JP. It is only 120m from the main pier and sits underneath the main building of the Phi Phi hotel.
These rooms are ideal if you like to get to know the local islanders. The rooms are simple Compact and good for travelers.
I visited Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort yesterday afternoon To see what this quiet part of the island is like in November when it is very busy in the main village. I walked up to Viewpoint and walked past it and followed the signs for Runtee bay. The walk took me about 50 minutes and I was glad again of the chance to buy some water at the viewpoint as it was hot.
The walked down two and tied a is a lot steeper then the walk up to viewpoint and I had to keep my wits about me as the soil was still wet from the last few days of storm. When I got to Phi Phi relax beach resort I found it in near perfect conditions with clear views right over to Lanta and the mainland province of Krabi. Also see The 1700m high Khao Blencha mountain some twenty miles behind Krabi town.
I like Phi Phi relax because it is what it says on the tin. Relaxing. I stayed to drink a Coca-Cola And chat with some of the long-term residents of the bungalows and schmoozed away three or four hours before I chickened out of the walk back and took the longtail boat around to the main Pier at Phi Phi Don.
I did a half day sunset tour of Phi Phi ley with Adam and Dave last week and the weather on Phi Phi was good though there were clouds at sunset and the boat just chugged home without the brilliance. The Heineken made it a bit better...
It's gone a bit quieter this last few days with almost nobody on the main beaches. It's that quieter time before the high season on Phi Phi when there can be almost nobody around and then at night every body meets up at one or other bar and the place is packed. Everybody has gathered my magic in one place. I like these nights more than high season nights as you get to see all the local divers and the divers returning to work.
The weather has been a mixture of rain for an hour or so and 2-3 hours of brilliant sunshine. A cool time to be on phi phi.
Crazy busy on the island with the Hippies bar rocking late at night. We needed a break from the night life and so we took a longtail boat for an explore.
We found some peace and quiet with a trip to Loh Bagao and a hard walk through Phi Phi Sofitel ruins to a view point above the PP Island Village. This was spectacular as you can see and the weather had perfect clarity for photographs.
When it's perfect it's near perfect. We took a longtail boat to near the Viking cave and had some fun on the rocks just to the north of it. The sun was out but the wind was definately up on our return to Phi Phi Don.
