Tuesday, August 26, 2008   Weather on Phi Phi Island

Clouding up in the morning and stayed that way most of the day. I went over to Phi Phi Ley and the weather wasn't any different their. We did a dive at Bida and then went over to Loh Samah for lunch. I havn't dived for ages but the visibility was very variable. In some places up to 15m and more and a couple of moments down to 8m-12m.

Monday, August 25, 2008   phi phi august weather

I went up to the Hippies bar for sunset this afternoon to chill with the others on the beach near Phi Phi Villa resort. The quality of air is so good when the sun does come out every sunset when the cloud clears is truly magnificent.

You got to compare it with a ropey old morning when it was dull and cloudy down at the Phi Phi Pier.

Friday, August 15, 2008   August weather on Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Weather
Another cracker of a morning though it rained last night. Loh Dalum beach is starting to get busy again after the rain pulled people of the beach in the afternoons last week.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008   Phi Phi Sofitel view point.

Crazy busy on the island with the Hippies bar rocking late at night. We needed a break from the night life and so we took a longtail boat for an explore.

We found some peace and quiet with a trip to Loh Bagao and a hard walk through Phi Phi Sofitel ruins to a view point above the PP Island Village. This was spectacular as you can see and the weather had perfect clarity for photographs.

When it's perfect it's near perfect. We took a longtail boat to near the Viking cave and had some fun on the rocks just to the north of it. The sun was out but the wind was definately up on our return to Phi Phi Don.

We went with some friends we met on the island

Tuesday, July 22, 2008   Maya Bay and The Beach

'The Beach' with Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be still a major magnet for people to visit the Phi Phi Islands, even though it was made many years ago -- in 2000 to be specific, that is just shy of a decade. The one great thing about 'The Beach' has been indeed Maya Bay on Phi Phi Ley. One gets to see this bay for the first time when coming with the Phi Phi Cruiser ferry from Phuket. The boat does not anchor there of course, but it gives a first glimpse of what can be seen on a later trip from Phi Phi Don Village to here.

Maya Bay from Phi Phi Cruiser ferry, June 2008

"Tourism has increased dramatically on Phi Phi island since Koh Phi Phi Leh was the backdrop for the 2000 movie 'The Beach', starring Leonardo DiCaprio." and other breathless statements can be read in any brochure about Phi Phi, giving great insistence that people do indeed come because they have seen the movie. I personally thought of 'The Beach' as rather mediocre, the psychology of the group of backpackers going at each other being obvious too fast and their characters flat and mainly uninteresting. But then I do think that most Americal moviews in recent years do lack personality, as they need to appease to everybody.

What I really believe is this: the majority of visitors coming to Phi Phi are not hidden rebels who want to flee civilization, they are much more like you and me and come because they want to experience nature (Maya Bay and the limestone cliffs of the region) without giving up too much on the exciting side of their holiday (the beach bars on nearby Phi Phi Island); scuba diving, snokeling, having a day on the beach and then a nice evening with friends in Reggae Bar...

And Maya Bay is really an icon for this kind of thing: tantalizingly beautiful, as natural a spot in this world as one can easily get to, full of romance. If you are doing your honeymoon on Phi Phi or nearby Krabi or Phuket, chances are very high that Maya Bay is on the list of must-see places.

Mixed showers and dry spells. The wind during the day calmed down at sunset.

Thursday, July 17, 2008   A slightly cloudy Phi Phi

Weather on Phi Phi was slightly cloudy today, with a few spots of blue sky in between. We have made a number of fotos, so that you can see for yourself.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008   Sunny July days on Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Island is exactly what my mind would conjure up if I tried to imagine a tropical island paradise... and I did not think that anything so magical would actually exist before I visited there for the first time!
I am not thinking alone that way, as the travel report from Anna, who is since yesterday on Phi Phi, shows. The pictures are also from today, courtesy of Siam UK Travel Phi Phi.

From Anna:
So we are mid way through another beautiful day on Koh Phi Phi. Now, after a day of rest we are fully embracing this backpacker beach vibe.

We have eaten at a few great spots - Ciao Bella (a very romantic Italian eatery with candles and tables right on the beach) and Little Britain (a fish and chips place) are our favorites.

We meant to get up first thing this morning and head to the pier where we were going to solicit a longtail boat to take us over to the much smaller Phi Phi Ley (and Maya Bay, the very spot they filmed the movie The Beach - a popular spot, though there is no development there, I don't think). Anyhow, it was rainy all last night and this morning, so we decided to delay that trip until tomorrow. We are here for 2 more days anyhow so one day made no difference.

So we spent the day on the beach in the hot hot sun. It has been decided that Phi Phi is best when it is high tide. Otherwise, at low tide, you have to walk for miles to get to a depth past your knees.

Finished my second book and started my third. Can you tell I am on vacation? Anyhow, must get back to our room with its blessed (and slightly costly) air conditioning for a quick cold shower and an aloe application.

Wednesday, July 9, 2008   Phi Phi Whaleshark sighting in July

The Phi Phi Islands are not especially known for their whaleshark sightings, but they are world-famous for their dive sites. Still, the yearly migration up the coast from Malaysia to the Similans and further north form their has Phi Phi on their route.

As Danny Pilling wrote in Thien's Dive Logbook about his sighting of a whaleshark today at Koh Bida Nok near Phi Phi Ley:
Awsome dive, bad viz from lots of plankton and quite strong currents, sound bad?? NOT FOR WHALE SHARK ENCOUNTERS!! Perfect conditions and hey presto, there she was. Encountered in the first 10 minutes of the dive, then after we returned to the boat, she decided to come check us out, thus rewarding us with 10-15 minute snorkel swim encounter. Awsome!! Low Season just got better!!!

Tuesday, July 8, 2008   Beautiful July on Phi Phi

Phi Phi Island is probably one of the most beautiful holiday spots in Thailand. Next time you head out to Thailand, make sure to pay a visit here, you won't regret it -- especially if the weather allows for pictures with blue skies and the amazing limestone cliffs in famous Phi Phi Tonsai Bay.

Sunday, July 6, 2008   Phi Phi Island visit in July

Today was another occasion for a trip from Phuket to Phi Phi Island. As we approached the island group, we were struck by the view of vertical limestone cliffs jutting straight out of the Andaman sea, especially on Phi Phi Ley and the two small Bidah Islands (mare rocks, but more famous for their diving below the surface). Already on first view it was obvious, Phi Phi Island will be absolutely gorgeous. We checked into our bungalow at Phi Phi Casita and headed straight for the beach. We knew immediately that we would enjoy our time here and we did!

Snorkeling Day Trip from Phi Phi Island

The following morning we headed out on a long tail boat for an all day tour of the surrounding islands and snorkeling. Unluckily, the weather on Phi Phi today was rainy, and we had some waves to cope with. Unfazed by all that, our boat driver began to race with the long tail boat beside us and most people had to wear their goggles as we were getting pounded by water!

Monkey Beach
Our first stop was at Phi Phi Monkey Beach, where we saw maybe around 20 macaque monkeys swinging from the trees, so close you could feed them. The cutest sight was a baby monkey carried by its mother.
We received a word of warning by the boat driver, those monkeys can be quite greedy: if they see something they want, to will not care that you are like 10 times their size, they will come and get it -- so do not hold food in your hand that you do not wish to give up for them!

Bamboo Island
Next our boat took us to Bamboo Island where it was time for our lunch-break.

The rest of the daytrip was then spent on Phi Phi Ley, the smaller of the two Phi Phi Islands, and totally uninhabited (at least with regard to permanent housing).

Viking Cave
Here, we had a look into Viking Cave, which is named after rock drawings that show ships seemingly very much like the Viking longboats. Cave swallows build their nests here, a very expensive commodity: they are collected and their essence is the base for birds nest soup, a local specialty.

Maya Bay and 'The Beach'
The most visited area of Phi Phi Ley is of course Maya Bay, made famous by the movie "The Beach". It was low tide so we were told that the only way to get to the beach of Maya Bay was to swim, climb over a bunch of rocks, go through a tunnel, and then walk a short distance to the other side. It was very cool to walk through the jungle and emerge onto "The Beach".

Dinner at Papaya Restaurant
Finally, after our day trip and to conclude the day, we went to dinner at Papaya Restaurant, a small and very good Thai restaurant. It is recommended to share a plate here because the portions are so large!

Saturday, June 28, 2008   Andaman Beach Resort Phi Phi: recommended for June

In June, Phi Phi is a little bit quieter, so very good deals can be had on accommodation. Rooms that increase three-fold at the end of the year can be had for very reasonable rates. If one searches for a good and simple budget accommodation, the 3-Star Andaman Beach Resort Phi Phi would be the right choice in June.

The Andaman Beach Resort is a modern bungalow development, built directly on the beach. It has 17 bungalows in 2 different styles. Each has its own terrace and a private bathroom with cold-water shower and European-style toilet. The rooms are beautifully furnished and have electric fans and sell currently for THB 1,159.
Even though many jhotels have room availability now, it might be a good idea to book the room in advance, as else you will be hassled mercilessly by dozens of touts upon leaving your ferry (and some of them put crazy markups on their rates).

Enjoy a day on the beach, basking in the sun, taking endless walks along the coast or enjoying an evening looking out to the sunset, when the Andaman Sea is flooded by the sun's golden rays...Andaman Beach Resort Phi PhiView from the Andaman Beach Resort direct access to the beach of Phi Phi
