Are these unusually Scary times in paradise Phi Phi Island? For what's going on in Bangkok today I don not want to repeat what the BBC has done very well. There is a famous tee shirt that you can buy in many of the clothing shops on Phi Phi island that list all the catastrophes that have happened to the tourist industry in the last ten years. The 3 wars in Kuwait, Iraq, Afganistan, 9-11, SARS, Bird Flu, and as recently as 2004, the Indian ocean tsunami. The t shirts were a joke that showed that in spite of massive reductions in tourists arriving during the calamities, the travel business was resilient and determined to keep on going. The tourists business had recovered from the latest disaster and was showing true signs of growing. When you’re tourist industry employs large swaths of the local population, growth in tourism is a good thing. Work for the local population Meant a better lifestyle not only for the individual person but also the families of dependents. These dependents are all over Thailand. So there are two points. Local people on the island are fully aware that the events in the end might stop tourists arriving in Thailand for a short while and this could harm the travel business greatly but only in the short term. The second point is the Thai travel business is very quick to get going after these calamities and can resume normal service overnight. It is interesting to note that bookings for Phi Phi holidays in 5,6,7 weeks from now are still going ahead at normal levels. This shows 3 points. Firstly people understand that the unrest in Thailand is a Thai matter and tourists are not involved. Secondly an extremely high percentage of travelers to Thailand are return Holiday makers and referrals from friends and are fully aware that what happens in Bangkok rarely influences or effects the islands to the South like Phi Phi. And thirdly a lot of these tourists are comfortable that the troubles will go away quickly. Labels: Bangkok, PAD, phi phi, politcal, unrest, yellow shirts Read more of this blog entry!
The Thai government declaring a state of emergency after members of the PAD(People's Alliance for Democracy) overwhelmed the Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang international airports of Bangkok with large numbers of followers, acted to resume order. While there is no discernible effects on holidaymakers and travelers in the southern islands of Phuket, Phi Phi island and koh Samui, the facts that the closure of Bangkok’s airports for however long have made vacationers worried about the travel plans. The travel industry of Thailand would be greatly affected if the main airports would be shut for too long. x This is one of the small simple guest houses on Phi Phi island that provide rooms full customers who have not Pre booked their holiday and have just walked in off the ferry to get a room. As it is often very full and the island can change from loads of availability two bursting at the seams, the Hussein guest house is often full recalls it is near the pier and easy for the touts to get back to the pier to try and get more customers from the same boat. The Hussein guest house is very close to the Moskito diving right opposite what used to be fatties restaurant owned by JP. It is only 120m from the main pier and sits underneath the main building of the Phi Phi hotel. These rooms are ideal if you like to get to know the local islanders. The rooms are simple Compact and good for travelers. Labels: Guest House, Hussain, phi phi Read more of this blog entry!
x One of my favorites sites around Phi Phi island is the lion fish. Has been given its name the cause of its large mane like tentacles or fins that fan out from just behind its head. These brown black and white tentacles make the body of the fish up here larger and so this is considered a defense mechanism against any predators. The Tentacles are dangerous to humans as they have a nasty poisonous tip. When swimming on all coral reefs the best policy to follow is to look and not touch. When it comes to the lion fish this policy is doubly gratifying and serious! I saw this lion fish while I was snorkeling on Phi Phi Ley Maya Bay on the reef 150m from the beach. We Moored up on a buoy from our longtail boat had a wonderful often in before watching the sunset go down in the Indian ocean. Labels: lion fish, phi phi island Read more of this blog entry!
I visited Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort yesterday afternoon To see what this quiet part of the island is like in November when it is very busy in the main village. I walked up to Viewpoint and walked past it and followed the signs for Runtee bay. The walk took me about 50 minutes and I was glad again of the chance to buy some water at the viewpoint as it was hot. The walked down two and tied a is a lot steeper then the walk up to viewpoint and I had to keep my wits about me as the soil was still wet from the last few days of storm. When I got to Phi Phi relax beach resort I found it in near perfect conditions with clear views right over to Lanta and the mainland province of Krabi. Also see The 1700m high Khao Blencha mountain some twenty miles behind Krabi town. I like Phi Phi relax because it is what it says on the tin. Relaxing. I stayed to drink a Coca-Cola And chat with some of the long-term residents of the bungalows and schmoozed away three or four hours before I chickened out of the walk back and took the longtail boat around to the main Pier at Phi Phi Don. The Worst affected areas of Thailand walls on the East Coast near Nakhorn Si Thamarat province some 300 miles away. Still The rain made for some poll whether and the last couple of days have been dismal. The fair is have still been running, Boat trips to the still bays still operate snorkeling and dive trips have still gone out. Bus have been very busy at night In the bad weather and has been a great place for holidaymakers to meet up and have some fun. I did a walk up to viewpoint in the cool rain yesterday and the scene was quite wild but really exhilarating. I seemed to be the only person up there and trees were being buffeted by strong gusts. Are came back to my room at the PP Casita Soaked but felt I’d had a real fun adventure. Labels: storm phi phi island Read more of this blog entry!
