The limestone cliffs of the Phi Phi Islands plunge straight down into the aqua marine sea... stunning. The lush vegetation provides the shade to make it all a bit cooler. Given that it is such a beautiful climbing destination, climbing is not popular on Phi Phi. This means the routes are often uncluttered. Bring your guide book. There are some bolted routes.

Phi Phi Island Rock climbing

Most climbing revolves around sunlight. The east walls of  Phi Phi Don island get in the shade at about 2 pm. This is when you see the long train of climbers slowly walking through the village and heading across the island in front of Phi Phi Cabana Hotel towards Tonsai Towers. These are the imposing walls to the left as you arrive on the ferry and can easily be reached on foot.

Birds Nests Climbers

If you want to see climbing in the raw get out to the Viking Cave and ask a local birds nest gatherer to collect you some nest (100 Baht for the climb, you don't get the nest!!!). No ropes, just bamboo scaffolding and the luck of the local cave gods. The main climbing is done from Maya Bay and on the extreme northern wall of Phi Phi Ley.

Hired gear

There is now a modicum of good gear at Spider Monkey climbing in Phi Phi Don Village. You can hire boots harnesses etc

Spider Monkey Climbing

Spider Monkey Climbing offer a guided service ideal for beginners who wan to see what it is like yo hang over the void. For those who want to be guided on some more remote routes or even up the impressive Tonsai Towers, Spider Monkey Climbing is the shop to head for in the main village.

Remember: Safety first.
