A review of Camping on Maya BayHotels

Jump to: Koh Phi Phi activities Galleries - Koh Phi Phi activities Articles

Camping on Maya Bay on Phi Phi island is a new tour that has started in 2007. It brings together some of the best features of Phi Phi island, namely a world famous beach, the clean air and some of the best scenery imaginable. Maya Bay is on Phi Phi Ley, the uninhabited small island of the Phi Phi islands and was made famous when Leonardo DiCaprio made his movie "The Beach".

A review of Camping on Maya Bay location map

Camping on Maya Bay is for those who love nature. The beach has one of the most extraordinary views in the world looking out to an almost perfectly round series of cliffs. The beach area is quite wide and rocks back maybe 100 meters from the high tide mark, and with the beach provides a large playing area to enjoy an amazing view.

The camping tour of Maya Bay leaves a Loh dalum by old fishing boats at about 4:00 in the afternoon and slowly motors around the west coast of Phi Phi Don under the tallest cliffs of the islands. This is a remarkable boat and camping trip, a fun experience.

Mark Sharky writes;

We left in the afternoon with about 10 other guys on the King camping tour to Maya bay. Everybody on the trip was traveling around Southeast Asia. We even had a couple of guys doing a round the world tour and they had been traveling for over two years. With this motley crew of Brits, Scandies, Aussies and Frenchies we headed out to our promised paradise on the world famous The Beach. When you see the film with Leonardo DiCaprio you get the buzz that traveling is all about exploring new places and of course doing some heavy introspection over as much alcohol as you can take!

If I was Leonardo DiCaprio

I was really psyched about seeing Maya Bay when nobody was there. The idea of being alone on the beach the same way as DiCaprio was in the film, kinda got me thinking about if I was ship wrecked on remote desert island, would I be able to cope. Of course the romantic vision of my daydream was far from reality but we had a memorable night and just as good time as I could have wished for.

Our guide Amer who we met at Hippies bar the night before, was the cool type with dreadlocks and a guitar and was seriously focused on fun. we met him on Loh Dalum bay and got aboard the boat King Camping which advertised "a night on the Beach". This was No speedboats and just slowly slowly left the bay and headed south to Phi Phi Ley.

Arriving on Phi Phi Ley

King Camping pulled up at Pi Ley on Phi Phi Ley so we could do some snorkeling and kayak into the mouth of a bay totally surrounded by cliffs. I was amazed to see a grey and blue 1m+ Moray eel squirming out of the coral . I watch in awe for 10 minutes while this amazing creature swam amongst the corals seemingly looking for a place to hide so he could catch his prey. Seriously wild and it psyched me up further, I new this trip would be brilliant.

The kayaking was ok but the boats kept filling with water, still it was a cool spot and it got me a chance to meet one of the girls, some one who I still keep in contact with ...!

Loh Samah to Maya Bay

We had another stop at Loh Samah and watched the guys doing the cliff jumping... way to aggressive for me! until we finally rounded the corner at Maya Bay just before sunset. Wow,wow wow. This place takes your breath away.

After getting the tents put down a BBQ was started and we ate a hands on meal. It always seems to taste better in the open air. We washed it down with some beer and whiskey and the scene was set for an almost perfect evening on the beach. I counted over 10 shooting stars, the night was fair alive. Ameh strummed away on the guitar, all heart and giving. He then did this wild fire show with some fuel he brought with him. The night passed on and I slept on the beach. Who needs the tents.

I was woken from a dream of a dog licking my toes to realize the tide was coming in!

This was a perfect day and night, the stuff of my city desk job day dreams.
